What we do
Qualitative Data Analysis Software or QDAS is a powerful tool. It opens up possibilities to dive deep into unique data and to examine things from exciting new perspectives in a systematic way. But getting started, or branching into new applications, can be intimidating–there are limitless approaches to take and so many tools to facilitate your exploration.

About Me
Joel began his career as an English educator in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. The experience there of test-oriented education systems and intense pressure on students shifted his interest towards education research and policy analysis. He chose to pursue a Master’s in Education from Harvard University, where he studied International Education Policy and interned at the Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR).
As a graduate student, he studied both quantitative and qualitative methods, but his deepest research interests were qualitative and focused on issues of trust and relationship building in educational organizations. He utilized a research method known as Portraiture to study a local teacher mentoring organization. Through analysis of his close observation and long-form interviews with local teacher mentors he created a portrait of the organization describing the ways in which they built deep and trusting relationships.
Prior to his current role as a MAXQDA trainer and consultant, Joel worked with the University of Wisconsin—Madison, Division of Extension and led numerous qualitative research projects ranging from individual program evaluations to large-scale organizational undertakings.
Currently, Joel consults with individuals on their master theses and dissertations, with public organizations on large-scale research projects and creates custom training on basic and advanced applications of MAXQDA.
